Mid Devon Leisure has a wide range of fitness activities, from our state of the art Fitness Studios to hundreds of classes run on a weekly basis.

Suitable for inexperienced/new gym users or for those who like following a programme to keep them motivated
Approximately 60 minutes
One hour consultation with a fitness consultant to discuss specific aims and goals as well as equipment preferences. You will be required to fill in a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire as well as having your blood pressure checked.
- A ‘Gym Start’ journey booklet will be started for you and will help you to achieve your goals, your fitness consultant will go through this with you.
- Optional tailored measurements to be taken, eg. body fat %, weight, height, peak flow, hydration %, visceral fat, etc.
- Start learning how to set up and use some of the equipment that will be included in your personalised programme.
2. Programme Show
Approximately 60 minutes
- Complete the construction of your personalised fitness programme which will be based on helping you reach the goals that you have set during your consultation.
- The instructor will complete a full run through of your programme to ensure you are happy with how to set the equipment up correctly.
3. 1st Review
Approximately 60 minutes
- Your fitness consultant will book you in for a 4-6 week review to help keep you motivated and progressing.
4. 2nd Review
Approximately 60 minutes
- At 10-12 weeks your instructor will book you in for another review and your three month assessment.
Thereafter you will have regular 6-12 week reviews to check on progress and make any necessary changes to help you continue achieving and exceeding your targets!
Suitable for experienced gym users – approximately 10 – 30 minutes.
This session will be booked in with a fitness consultant who will show you how to use the fitness equipment where necessary. This will normally take up to 30 minutes, dependant on individual requirements. You will be required to fill in a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire as well as having your blood pressure checked.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring a towel and water bottle and wear suitable clothing/footwear to exercise in for all sessions.

What is Teen Gym?
The sessions are for children aged 11-15 years old and are supervised by fully qualified fitness instructors. The fitness team will ensure that the children have fun in a safe environment using the correct techniques and equipment to gain the best health and fitness benefits.
We believe that exercise should be fun and that the social side is very important, so we encourage interaction and gym challenges to provide a fun element! These challenges are optional; however we have found that our young fitness members really enjoy taking part!
How it works
Before your child starts teen gym they will need to complete a health questionnaire and a code of conduct will need to be signed by the child and parent/guardian.
On their first session they will either be given a free booking card to allow them to pre-book teen gym sessions and pay on arrival or a membership can be arranged.
For the first 4-6 sessions the teens will be shown various types of equipment, which is deemed safe and suitable for each individual to use. At the end of that time a bespoke programme can be designed for them. Having a personalised programme will help with guidance and achieving fitness goals!
Unable to attend teen gym sessions
For children who cannot attend the teen gym sessions they are able to use the gym under the supervision of a parent/guardian. This option will require the child to book in with an instructor who will put together their programme and the parent/guardian will also need either to attend this session or book in their own ‘quick start’/’gym start. This is to allow the parent/guardian to competently supervise their child with specific equipment.
The parent/guardian does not have to use the gym themselves during these sessions but they do need to be in the gym for the duration of their child’s session.
What is personal training?
Personal Training offers one-on-one workout sessions with a qualified trainer. Your trainer will assist you in developing a comprehensive personal fitness programme.
Whether you are just starting an exercise programme, looking for some variety in your existing programme, training for an upcoming event or occasion your Personal Trainer offers in-depth education and motivation to guide you towards your goals.
Personal training can either take place in the gym or in one of our dance studios.

- Wear suitable clothing – Supportive trainers and comfy, lightweight clothing that is easy to move around in

- It is useful to bring a warmer top to put on for the cool down part of the session.
Exercise of referral.
What is the Active Start scheme?
The Active Start scheme provides specialised, supervised exercise sessions for anyone whose fitness and health conditions can be improved by regular exercise. The scheme aims to help people get into exercise/restart after injury/ill health. The scheme runs for 12 weeks and participants need to be able to commit to at least one exercise session per week.
Who is the scheme suitable for?
It is suitable for a wide range of people and conditions, including those who may not have exercised before, or not for a very long time. Examples of conditions include: high blood pressure, diabetes, mental health issues and arthritis.
What are the benefits for participants?
Many benefits are gained by taking regular exercise including improved muscle tone, strength, fitness, energy levels, mobility and flexibility, a decrease in body fat, maintenance of a healthy body weight, a boost in confidence, reduced blood pressure, reduced cholesterol, reduced risk of heart disease, increased bone density as well as all the social/mental benefits.
What do I do? how do I start?
Firstly you will need to have a referral from a heath professional to join the scheme. Referrals can come from your GP, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Consultant etc. Once you have your referral you will then contact your local Mid Devon Leisure facility to book a consultation with a member of the fitness team.
What happens at the consultation?
With the help of your instructor you will complete a health and lifestyle questionnaire. Measurements are taken, including blood pressure and a simple fitness test, which will be used to develop your activity programme and help you recognise your progress.
Bring along your referral paperwork, which will be issued to you by your health professional, wearing comfortable clothing suitable for moving around in, and trainers or comfortable soft sole shoes, and a water bottle. Payment and activity options will be explained at this time, and after your consultation an appointment will be made for your first supervised session.
Your programme will take into account your fitness level and medical background, and will be based mostly in the fitness studio and set criteria for the scheme.
What happens at my supervised session?
At your first supervised session you will go through your exercise programme with your instructor. You will need to attend at least four supervised sessions to get you used to your programme and setting up the machines. After four sessions you may be signed off so you can use the gym without supervision. This will depend upon your medical condition and how confident you are feeling.
Mid way review
After about six weeks you will be asked to come in for a review, when we will take your blood pressure and update your exercise programme.
After about twelve weeks you will have your final assessment, which will follow a similar format to your initial consultation, focussing on how you have progressed and recommendations for the future. We encourage you to continue exercising after completing your Active Start journey so that your improvements are maintained and not lost over time.
Please note that you may only have one referral in a twelve month period.

What does the scheme cost?
Monthly and pay as you go options are available. Circumstances will be different from person to person, and this will be discussed with you at your consultation. Ask for an application form at reception if you would like to join.

Some important tips
A national fitness survey found that the majority of the population did not take enough exercise necessary to achieve benefits to their health. Mid Devon District Council and local health professionals want to improve this situation.
This scheme is being funded with the support of Mid Devon Public Health and Mid Devon Leisure services and aims to encourage people to become more active.
Exercise should be fun – we hope that you enjoy your time as an Active Start customer and that regular exercise becomes a part of your lifestyle.
- Always warm up properly before exercising
- Wear loose fitting clothing and flat shoes
- Start gently and build up gradually
- After a heavy meal wait at least 2 hours before exercising
- Never exercise when you have a cold or feel unwell
- Ensure you cool down and stretch after exercise
- If it starts to hurt – STOP!
The NHS physical activity guidelines for adults states that to stay healthy adults should aim to achieve at least 150 moderate/or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week (or a combination of the two).
One minute of vigorous activity = 2 minutes of moderate activity.
Adults should also complete strength exercises on two or more days a week that work all the major muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms). This should be your target – it may take a few weeks to get there but when you do you will feel so much better physically and mentally.
Activities can include gardening, walking, housework, DIY and so on. They do not need to be sport related.
