Swimming Lessons.

Let’s build confidence

Welcome to Swim Like a Fish Swim School from Mid Devon Leisure

Swim Like a Fish Swim School prides itself in providing and promoting a fun, friendly and safe environment in which to learn to swim which is inclusive regardless of age or ability. We provide and promote understanding of individual needs allowing us to offer equal opportunities for all. The swim schools run at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre and Exe Valley Leisure Centre.

With the A.S.A. National Plan for Teaching Swimming as a framework, we offer preparation for life, from the early days of building confidence, through gaining body awareness, core strength and endurance of the Long Term Athlete Programme, regardless of sport. water or land based.

Opportunities begin from birth with our parent and toddler sessions and progress on towards independent learning and courses for all ages and abilities, with or without buoyancy aids. Courses run all year round and are following a continual assessment programme. When a child has achieved all the criteria for the stage they are given the opportunity to change stages. Each child moves when they are ready.

Our teachers, instructors and coaches are all CRB checked and hold professional qualifications from the Amateur Swimming Association, Swimming Teachers Association, British Sub Aqua Club, Royal Life Saving Society and the National Coaching Federation.

Their technical knowledge allows us to be able to offer courses in rookie life guarding, water polo, synchronised swimming, diving, snorkeling and competitive swimming, with a clear structure for further development. Our staff are committed to developing and expanding their experience giving Swim Like a Fish students up to date and beneficial knowledge.

We are extremely proud of our Swim Like a Fish Swim School and endeavour to provide a multi-skilled pathway with an emphasis on enjoyment and safety, while encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Follow the stages link to read about the different stages within the swim school.

Enrolling on a course

Firstly, look at the stages and decide upon which level is the most suitable. For children under the age of 5, the choice of level will depend upon age as children are grouped this way for the most effective teaching and learning methods. If you are unsure about the stage, please call the leisure centre and ask for a free assessment. A swimming teacher will arrange with you a mutually convenient time to assess the child, so placing them on the correct level.

There are usually spaces available on each level as there is continuous movement between the levels as children move on. Keep checking regularly if you are waiting for a particular day or time, as bookings can change daily. The receptionist will be able to give you an idea of when the different levels are offered and where current spaces are available.

Before commencement of the first course you will be required to complete a registration form, giving us a few details about the person joining the course. If any of your details change it is your responsibility to update us with these changes. The paperwork should be completed by the parent or guardian of the child and completed along with the relevant payment before the start of the course.

Swim Like A Fish operates on a continual assessment basis following the A.S.A. National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Therefore swimmers continue to attend their classes until they have completed all of the requirements and learned all of the necessary skills to the expected standards.

If children are ready to move up into the next stage at any time during the course the teacher will give the child a slip to take to reception where they can book into the next stage without having to wait until the end of a course. This happens regularly, and so the continual movement of children means that places become available in the next stage for them to move into.

If there is no space to move into immediately the child stays in their current course and they are able to continue to come to lessons until they can move.

Our aim is to teach not only swimming but a variety of aquatic disciplines to anyone, regardless of ability or age in a fun, safe environment. All of our instructors are qualified to the Amateur Swimming Association (A.S.A.) or Swimming Teachers Association (S.T.A) standards, and are DBS checked.

We follow the A.S.A. learn to swim pathway described as a “Journey through aquatics this learn to swim scheme provides stages for swimmers to progress through, becoming competent, confident and safe in the water”.
