Our Chairman, Councillor Ray Radford has now provided the following advice to members of the public wishing to pay their respects:

Book of condolence

Following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, a book of condolence will be open at at Phoenix House, Tiverton, see how to find us.

If you wish to sign the book of condolence, you can do so daily between the hours of 9.00am and 7.00pm including weekends. The book will remain open to the public until 5.00pm on the day following the Queen’s funeral.

Please note that it won’t be possible to provide an undercover waiting area where external queuing occurs and the weather is inclement.

For those who don’t wish to attend in person, an electronic book of condolence can be signed by visiting royal.gov.uk.

Flowers

If you wish to lay flowers in remembrance of the Queen, a dedicated area has been setup in front of Phoenix House. We encourage anyone wishing to lay flowers to use this location and to remove and deposit the wrappings in the bins provided before laying them. Anything else left in this area will not be retained.

It will be possible to leave flowers up until 5.00pm on the day after the funeral. Following this, it’s envisaged that the flowers will be removed, composted and the resultant material used in our parks and gardens.

Day of the funeral

On the day of the Funeral, Monday 19 September, our Chairman will lead a two minute silence at 11.55am outside Phoenix House, in which the public are welcome to attend.

Our Chairman, Councillor Ray Radford issued the following initial statement:

“On behalf of Mid Devon District Council I would like to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family following the announcement, by Buckingham Palace, that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died.

“While most of us will never have met her, she touched many lives through her years of dedicated service to our nation. We should remember and reflect upon this service and show our gratitude for the work she carried out so tirelessly and so selflessly.

“As a mark of respect the Union flag at Phoenix House, Tiverton, will be flown at half-mast (except during national and local Proclamation events) until the day after the funeral.

“I am aware that many of our residents will wish to to pay their own respects to our late Sovereign. 

“Precise details relating to these events will be released as soon as timings are confirmed nationally and at county level.”
